YouTubers extorting brands? The video that set YouTube on fire

Earlier today, the channel Astro Recargado (361,000 subscribers) published a nine-and-a-half-minute video that everyone is talking about: “¡SE PUDRIÓ TODO EN YOUTUBE! EXPONEN a YOUTUBERS que EXTORSIONAN a MARCAS con RESEÑAS NEGATIVAS”.

The video’s claim is a serious one: that some YouTubers threaten brands with negative reviews unless they pay up or give in to their demands. Within hours it passed 21,000 views, and the comments are on fire: outrage, calls for lawsuits, and the lament that “YouTube has lost its essence”.

My cool-headed take:

An honest negative review is legitimate. It’s YouTube’s bread and butter, and nobody can or should stop it.

Something very different is threatening to publish one — or not to take one down — in exchange for money. That’s no longer criticism: it’s coercion, and coercion has a name in criminal law.

Careful with parallel trials, though: the names circulating in the comments are unverified accusations. Pointing fingers on YouTube is easy; proving a crime is not.

The interesting part is the underlying debate: the power some creators have amassed over small brands, which sometimes prefer to pay rather than risk a devastating review. That imbalance is real, and this video has put it on the table.

We’ll see whether this stays a one-day controversy or a brand dares to press charges. For now, the video is right above for you to judge for yourself.

And this goes beyond YouTube. The same blackmail circulates on Google Business and Booking: restaurants and hotels threatened with one-star reviews unless dinner is on the house or the night is free. The platforms go after it — Google and Booking have policies against review extortion — but the drip continues.

And there’s a silent victim in all this: influencers’ own good name. Every case that comes to light erodes trust in the whole industry. Credibility is a creator’s only real asset; using your audience as a weapon is short-term gain for long-term pain.
